Turned Post Capital

Turned Post Capital

Turned fence post capitals were popular during the colonial federation period.

During early colonial times, only the simplest of materials were available. Convicts fashioned bricks in wood fires with lime from burned oyster shells. Single room houses were constructed by those able to acquire the materials. Later as housing developed, single room dwellings were expanded with the door still leading into the original room. Simple houses were built with 2 to 4 rooms, surrounding a central hallway. This lead into the federation period which brought with it more elaborate designs. Many federation style homes are still around today with their earlier colonial components, dwindling in the past. As gardens became more complex, timber lattice screens were used to partition the gardens into sections and provide more privacy. Some of the earliest fences were made of picket or wire but later more varied selections became available. For those who could afford a fence, a wide selection of Fence Post Capitals soon became available and are still popular to this date.
