Q 1. Where would you normally use timber handrail volute (or scroll) ?
As a decorative way of terminating the handrail at the bottom of a staircase. Combined with a bullnose tread, a volute (aka scroll) will give any staircase that look of grandeur.
Q 2. How do I know whether I need a left hand or right hand one ?
Standing at the bottom of a staircase and looking up the stair, a left hand volute is on your left side, and a right hand volute is on your right.
Q 3. What is it made out of ?
Plantation grown Australian Oak (depending on availability it is either Victorian Ash or Tasmanian Oak).
Q 4. What are the important dimensions ?
The overall width of the volute is 270mm.
The arm of the volute is pitched at 37 degrees, which is an angle that most staircases are built at.
Q 5. How do you fix it to the handrail ?
Use either the Zipbolt ST-Maxi UT or Zipbolt UT Rail Bolt. Glue the join and then apply a small amount of sanding to blend.
Q 6. How should you finish it ?
If looking for a natural finish, then a clear lacquer will be fine; or you can use a stain to achieve your desired colour then use a clear lacquer to finish it off.
